Why We Built FreeAI.tools

The problem with "free AI tools" lists

Try searching for free AI tools and you'll run into two types of results. The first kind dumps 500 to 20,000 tools on a page with zero filtering, no quality bar, and no real information about what "free" actually means for each one. The second kind looks curated but is really just a paid placement list dressed up as editorial content. Neither is actually useful when you're trying to find a tool that works for you today, without pulling out a credit card.

That frustration is exactly what led us to build FreeAI.tools. We wanted a directory that was honest, small enough to actually navigate, and built around one core question: does the free tier give you real value, or is it just a bait-and-switch trial?

How we decide what gets listed

We cap the directory at 100 tools. That's a deliberate choice. There are thousands of AI tools out there, and we're not trying to index all of them. We're trying to surface the ones worth your time. For every tool we consider, we sign up with a fresh account and actually use the free tier. We check whether it has meaningful usage limits, whether it requires a credit card to get started, and whether the free plan is something a real person would use day to day or just a five-minute demo that locks you out the moment you do anything useful.

We update the directory every week because free tiers change. A tool that was genuinely free six months ago might now require a paid plan for the same features. When that happens, we update the listing or remove it entirely.

Built with Southeast Asia in mind

We're based in Southeast Asia, and a lot of AI tools have inconsistent availability across the region. Some require a US phone number to sign up. Others are technically accessible but slow to the point of being unusable without a VPN. A few flat-out block signups from certain countries.

We specifically test every tool from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Where a tool works without any workarounds, we mark it as SEA accessible. Where it doesn't, we note that too. If you're in the region, you can filter by this and skip the tools that will waste your time.

Who we are

FreeAI.tools is built and maintained by Skillnest Market. We build educational tools and learning resources for students and professionals in Southeast Asia and beyond. AI tools are a big part of how people learn and work now, so a reliable, honest directory felt like a natural fit for what we do.

We don't accept payment for listings. Every tool in the directory got there because we think it's genuinely worth using. If you find one that no longer deserves its spot, or if you want to suggest something we've missed, we want to hear about it.
